Montastrea annularis

(Ellis and Solander, 1786)

Colonies are massive, columnar or flat. Corallites are flush with the colony surface to conical, this variation mostly occurring between, rather than within, colonies. Septo-costae are neatly arranged. Long and short septa alternate. Columellae are small and compact.

Colour: Brown or yellowish.

Habitat: Most reef environments.

Abundance: Common, frequently a dominant species of lagoons and upper reef slopes.

Similar species: Favia stelligera , Montastrea curta , Montastrea salebrosa

Taxonomic note: Taxonomic note: Some recent authors have divided Montastrea annularis into smaller, semi-distinct taxonomic units, M. annularis, M. faveolata and M. franksi. Source reference: Veron (2000). Taxonomic references: Laborel (1969), Roos (1971), Zlatarski and Estalella (1982). Additional identification guides: Colin (1978), Humann (1993, illustrating the aforementioned smaller taxonomic units).
